Volunteer Project List

There are many ways for self-motivated, independent people to become involved in NAAFA at the national level. Following are highlights of NAAFA's current volunteer needs. If a position or subject area listed below piques your interest, please write, call, or email to the Volunteer Recruitment Coordinator in care of the NAAFA office. KIDS PROJECT COORDINATOR

Research articles and update the existing Children's Kit. Coordinate volunteers and speakers for schools, libraries. Send out educational information to interested persons. You will be the contact for parents having difficulties with the school system, bullying, accessibility. [To volunteer, email NAAFA]

VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR

Contact those who show and interest in volunteering for NAAFA, Inc. Work with office staff to secure volunteer opportunities for special projects, events, etc. [To volunteer, email NAAFA]

GRAPHIC ARTIST

Skilled in layout and design. Desktop publishing capabilities preferred. For production work on pamphlets, promotional materials, and NAAFA Newsletter. [To volunteer, email NAAFA]

MEDIA COORDINATOR

Send out questionnaire to find media representatives in the NAAFA community. Interview those interested - work directly with NAAFA staff. [To volunteer, email NAAFA]

FUNDRAISING AND RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT COORDINATOR

To oversee NAAFA's fundraising programs. Should have extensive experience in direct mail, planned giving, major donor, and corporate giving programs. [To volunteer, email NAAFA]

ADOPTION COORDINATOR

To field inquiries regarding adoption discrimination and draft pamphlet on adoption options for fat people. [To volunteer, email NAAFA]

ANTHROPOMETRICS COMMITTEE MEMBERS

To work on projects relating to public accommodations for fat people. [To volunteer, email NAAFA]

ATTORNEY

Eligible to practice in California with some knowledge of New York non-profit law, to act as organizational attorney. Pro bono or reduced fee preferred. [To volunteer, email NAAFA]

ATTORNEY/LEGAL SPECIALIST

To handle discrimination complaints and make referrals. [To volunteer, email NAAFA]

BIG MAN'S SIG COORDINATOR

To coordinate Big Man's SIG, publish quarterly newsletter for fat men, and to do outreach and membership development for fat men. [To volunteer, email NAAFA]

CONSULTANTS/LIAISONS

Individuals who are involved in the following movements to act as liaisons to those communities, and as consultant to NAAFA in ally building and multicultural diversity: Disability Rights, African-American Rights, Asian American Rights, Native American Rights, Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual Rights. ALSO NEEDED: Project coordinators to develop outreach programs for the following underrepresented groups: fat men, children, teens and young adults. [To volunteer, email NAAFA]

CORPORATE BUSINESS RECRUITMENT COORDINATOR

To recruit business and professional NAAFA members. [To volunteer, email NAAFA]

EMPLOYMENT COORDINATOR

To develop materials relating to employment, and to answer inquires to the NAAFA office. [To volunteer, email NAAFA]

FASHION COMMITTEE CHAIR

To develop materials relating to fashion, and to answer inquiries to the NAAFA office. [To volunteer, email NAAFA]

HALL OF FAME COMMITTEE MEMBERS

To write biographies on those currently in the Hall of Fame and to research and write BIOS for future inductees in the NAAFA Hall of Fame. To organize and display photos and biographies in a manner suitable for a traveling exhibit. [To volunteer, email NAAFA]

INVESTIGATIVE REPORTERS/WRITERS

To write special features and articles for the NAAFA Newsletter. Please send writing samples. [To volunteer, email NAAFA]

LAVENDER SIG COORDINATOR

To coordinate SIG for lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and transgendered people. [To volunteer, email NAAFA]

LEGAL AND LEGISLATIVE COMMITTEE CHAIR

To provide information and referrals as needed; to coordinate legislative efforts; to track pending size-related legislation and litigation. [To volunteer, email NAAFA]

LESBIAN FAT ACTIVIST NETWORK COORDINATOR

To coordinate LFAN, publish newsletter, and do outreach to the fat lesbian community. [To volunteer, email NAAFA]

MARKETING AND ADVERTISING COMMITTEE MEMBERS

To develop promotional materials for NAAFA events, to develop membership recruitment strategies and campaigns, and to design advertisements. Previous marketing or public relations experience helpful. [To volunteer, email NAAFA]

OUTREACH COORDINATOR

To reply to mail and calls from people in crisis. [To volunteer, email NAAFA]

RESEARCHER/WRITER

To research demographics of the fat population. [To volunteer, email NAAFA]

SIZE ACCEPTANCE WEEK COORDINATOR

To coordinate NAAFA's Size Acceptance Week activities, which involves working with Chapters and other groups in the size acceptance movement, writing Newsletter articles, and assisting in Size Acceptance Week media relations. [To volunteer, email NAAFA]

SPEAKERS

To belong to the Speakers' Bureau and speak at local schools, associations, and business meetings. [To volunteer, email NAAFA]

TEEN SIG COORDINATOR

Teen and/or adult to reactivate SIG. [To volunteer, email NAAFA]

TEEN/YOUNG ADULT COMMITTEE CHAIR

To develop programs and materials to improve the self-image of fat young people. [To volunteer, email NAAFA]

WEIGHT LOSS SURGERY ADVISOR

To provide assistance to individuals seeking information regarding weight loss surgery; to update NAAFA's weight loss surgery resource information; to speak with the media regarding weight loss surgery. [To volunteer, email NAAFA]

WEIGHT LOSS SURGERY SURVIVORS SIG COORDINATOR

To provide information and support to those who have had weight loss surgery. [To volunteer, email NAAFA]

WRITERS/NETWORKING SPECIALISTS

In an ongoing attempt to influence public policy by educating the people who affect the lives of fat people, NAAFA is attempting to have articles related to size acceptance printed in publications of professional associations. NAAFA is seeking volunteer writers with networking skills who belong to professional associations in the following fields: Human Resources/Affirmative Action Officers; Mental Health; Medical; Dental; Chiropractic; Teacher/School Counseling; Advertising; Engineering.
