About the FATF

The Fat Activist Task Force is a coalition of activists participating in organized campaigns to fight size discrimination. Formed in 1989 in a concerted effort to get Hallmark to remove offensive products from their line, our success demonstrates the effectiveness of a coordinated voice directed at a single target.

Since that first campaign the FATF has continued to fight size discrimination. Recent projects have included:

  • Working with the Federal Trade Commission to help stop diet fraud
  • Assisting in a successful campaign to add height and weight to the list of characteristics protected against discrimination in San Francisco
  • Speaking out against a fat toddler being removed from her home
  • Helping an LAPD Officer who faced career-ending disciplinary action over reporting an offensive "No Fat Cops!" poster in a captain's office
  • Protesting LIFE Act H.R. 3177, which madated the development and demonstration of intervention strategies for the "overweight and obese" for use at worksites and in community settings.
  • Supporting Elizabeth Fisher in her campaign to change the existing federal regulation that requires automakers to manufacture seat belt that fit people up to only 215 lbs. (For more information on this ongoing campaign, visit http://www.ifisher.com.)

San Francisco is first jurisdiction in U.S. to offer guidelines on how to prevent discrimination based on weight or height

On Thursday, July 26, the San Francisco Human Rights Commission unanimously approved historic guidelines for implementing the height/weight anti-discrimination law. San Francisco is now the first jurisdiction in the U.S. to offer guidelines on how to prevent discrimination based on weight or height. These guidelines should serve as a model for other cities, states, and countries to follow in drafting similar legislation.
